Family & Community Work

Our Family and Community Work

Parent engagement is a key focus for NHESC

NHESC is a calm and purposeful learning place where children and families are welcome to come to meet with staff to talk through any difficulties they may have in school and in their daily life. We have an open-door policy for any parents or families that need help, support and guidance or are in crisis

Staff deliver hampers at Christmas to all our families which ensures a Christmas dinner is provided for every one of our students including the nice extras such as chocolates, crackers and biscuits!

We provide help with food from local Food Banks and offer home cooked foods for our students to take home for their families

The SENCO, Helen Emery and a Deputy Designated Safeguarding member of staff offer half termly drop-in coffee mornings. The focus of these sessions is about building positive communications, establishing respectful working relationships and opening lines of communication with our families to see where and how we can support them in the future. These in turn will feed into informing us about gaps in knowledge and areas of need which direct the topic for a ‘workshop/ focus session’ later in the same half term.

Subject areas of the focus groups we will be hoping to put in place will be Emotion Regulation; living with ASD/ ADHD; upskilling adults for work placements; depression and anxiety and sleep problems for teenagers.   Some parents have requested these on a 1-2-1 base, and these have been very successful.

A Keeping in Touch Day (KIT) for all parents of both Key Stages is offered twice yearly. Parents and carers meet with lesson staff and tutors to look at the work produced and discuss any worries they may have about their child’ education. External agencies are also on site to support and advice on areas such as ADHD, Autism, EHCPs, Reading and Literacy and the Tenn Brain. This is well received, and parents engage in all activities available

As a Centre we work closely with JAG, Joint Action Group with Letchworth District Council and local Police, to raise concerns from the local community and parents / carers and find solutions for local issues.
